  • How Much Cash to Bring?
    • A good starting point is to withdraw around 2.5 million IDR (about $160 USD) from an ATM to cover any additional expenses, such as souvenirs or extra meals. This should be more than enough to get you started.

    ATMs in the Area:

    • There are plenty of reliable ATMs in Medan (the main city near Lake Toba) and Parapat where you can withdraw cash with Visa or MasterCard.
    • It’s best to use ATMs that dispense 100,000 IDR bills for larger withdrawals, and you can typically take out a maximum of 2.5 million IDR per transaction.

  • How Safe is Aceh Singkil, Pulau Banyak, Ketambe, Sibayak, and Lake Toba for Foreigners?

Aceh Singkil, Pulau Banyak, Ketambe, Sibayak, and Lake Toba are incredibly safe destinations for foreign travelers, offering a blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. Each of these places presents its own unique atmosphere, and while they are generally peaceful, there are a few things to keep in mind to make the most of your journey.

    Aceh Singkil:

    • Safety: Aceh Singkil is a relatively peaceful area, especially for travelers exploring its natural beauty. While it’s more remote, locals are warm and welcoming. As with most rural areas, it’s always good to respect local customs and practices, especially when visiting small villages.
    • Tip: Travel around during daylight hours, and be cautious if you are heading into more remote spots. Avoid venturing out late at night in unfamiliar areas.

    Pulau Banyak:

    • Safety: Pulau Banyak is an idyllic, laid-back paradise in Aceh. It is a safe and serene destination with a relaxed vibe. The locals are friendly, and you’ll feel safe exploring the islands.
    • Tip: The area is not heavily populated with tourists, so you might find yourself as one of the few visitors enjoying the tranquility of this gem. It’s a great place to disconnect, but be cautious about the less frequented beaches after dark.

    Ketambe:

    • Safety: Ketambe, located in the heart of Sumatra, is a safe haven for nature lovers, especially those interested in wildlife and trekking. It is a small and peaceful village, and while the jungles can be dense and remote, it’s well-trodden by adventure seekers.
    • Tip: Stick to the main trails during your treks, and always travel with a guide if you’re venturing into the jungle to ensure your safety.

    Sibayak:

    • Safety: Sibayak, home to the Sibayak Volcano, is a popular hiking destination and is generally safe for visitors. Most tourists explore the volcano’s trails with a guide, making it a very secure and adventurous activity.
    • Tip: When hiking the volcano, ensure you are prepared for the trek and follow safety instructions from your guide. The volcanic area can have hot spots, so stay on designated paths.

    Lake Toba:

    • Safety: Lake Toba, especially in Samosir Island and Parapat, is extremely safe for foreigners. It’s a well-established tourist destination with friendly locals, many of whom are eager to share their rich Batak culture with you.
    • Tip: Similar to the other destinations, it’s safest to avoid walking around isolated areas after dark. In most tourist spots, you’ll find plenty of opportunities for activities during the day, from kayaking to visiting ancient Batak villages.

    Local Interaction:

In all of these locations, the locals are incredibly welcoming and friendly. You might hear children calling out to you, and they may even come over for a chat or ask to take a photo with you. The people are curious but kind, and they’ll often go out of their way to make you feel comfortable.

To ensure you’re fully prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable adventure, here’s a list of recommended items to pack:

    • A headlamp (or flashlight) is essential for any night-time activities. A headlamp will help you navigate in low light or when you need both hands free.

    • Staying hydrated is key! Bring a water bottle or pouch (preferably 1L to 2L) to keep water with you during your adventure. It should fit inside our provided PDF external pouch for safe and easy access.

    Coral & Marine-Safe Sunscreen:

    • Protect your skin and the environment by bringing coral-safe sunscreen. Look for sunscreens free from harmful chemicals like Oxybenzone, Octocrylene, Octinoxate, Parabens, and Nanoparticles, which can harm the delicate marine ecosystems.

Generally, Lake Toba experiences a cooler climate due to its elevation, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Pulau Banyak enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures around 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 89°F), perfect for kayaking and water activities.

  • What is a Typical Kayaking Day Like in Lake Toba and Pulau Banyak?

A day of kayaking in Lake Toba and Pulau Banyak is an adventure filled with exploration, breathtaking views, and plenty of relaxation along the way. Here’s what you can expect:

    Morning:

We usually start the day with a hearty breakfast around 7:30 AM. The homestays often serve breakfast starting at 7 AM, so feel free to get up early to enjoy the fresh local dishes. After breakfast, it’s time to get ready for the day ahead!

By 9 AM, we are usually in the kayaks or ready to board the boat if we’re moving to a new location. Kayaking is not a race—it’s about exploring, enjoying nature, and taking in the scenery. We’ll paddle out to beautiful spots around Lake Toba or Pulau Banyak, making stops for sightseeing, photography, and small hikes to viewpoints or beaches.

    Lunch:

We aim to stop for lunch around 12 PM at a scenic location like a beach or a small jetty. During the day, we make multiple stops, whether it’s to hike up a peak, explore caves, or take in the views of the karst formations and serene waters. You’ll have time to snorkel or simply relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Lunch typically lasts about 2 hours as we make time to rest, snorkel, or simply enjoy the atmosphere. We might also go for a walk or explore nearby areas before heading back to the kayaks.

Around 2 PM, we get back in the kayaks and continue exploring. The pace is relaxed, with plenty of opportunities to stop at small islands, beaches, or viewpoints. You’ll paddle along the coastline, passing by stunning cliffs, clear waters, and uninhabited islands. We aim to finish the kayaking for the day by 4 PM, but it depends on the group and the distance.

    Evening:

By the time we arrive back at our camp or homestay, you’ll have time to relax, chat with your fellow adventurers, or even take a dip in the water. Dinner is served at 7 PM, and after a full day of exploration, it’s a great time to share stories and enjoy local dishes.

If you’re up for it, there’s an option for night kayaking around 8 PM, where we paddle for about 1 hour under the stars—an unforgettable experience.

We wrap up the day by heading to bed around 9 PM or staying up to enjoy the social atmosphere—your choice!

    Important Details:

Kayak Time: On a typical day, you’ll kayak for 2-3 hours before lunch and 2-3 hours after lunch. It’s not continuous, and we’ll make lots of stops along the way to enjoy the sights, do a little hiking, or snorkel.

    • Full mobile coverage with strong 4G in most areas of the city.
    • Best place to make calls, send messages, and download important info before heading into nature.

     Toba & Kayaking Adventures

    • Mobile signal is patchy on the water. Some areas around Lake Toba may have coverage, but expect to be offline in more remote parts.
    • You will have good signal almost all area of Toba

Pulau Banyak & Asahan Rafting – Limited Connectivity

    • Pulau Banyak has weak mobile coverage, and some islands have no signal at all. But you will have good signal at the homestay/ cottage.
    • Asahan Rafting area is mostly out of reach, especially in deep jungle and river valleys.

Ketambe & Sibayak – Nature First, Signal Second

    • Ketambe (deep jungle): Almost no signal except in the village before trekking.
    • Sibayak Volcano Trek: Some reception near Berastagi town, but weak in the mountains.

    Tip!

    • Telkomsel is the best network for remote areas but still unreliable in deep jungle and open waters.
    • Let family & friends know you’ll be offline and enjoy the digital detox!

Ready to unplug and fully embrace the adventure?

  • What kind of electrical plugs do they use in Indonesia? Or do I need a travel adapter on the trip?

Indonesia use Plug Type: Type C (two-pin European style) and sometimes Type F (two-pin with earth). Voltage: 220V, Frequency: 50Hz.
Adapter Needed: If you’re traveling from the UK, US, or other regions with different plug types, you’ll need a travel adapter.

  • During the kayaking trip does the homestay have electricity and which voltage?

For most of the destinations (Toba, Asahan Rafting, Ketambe, and Sibayak), generally have 220V electricity, but it’s prudent to be prepared for potential outages. Electricity in Pulau Banyak is often powered by generators, available mostly during the evening, typically from 6 PM to 6 AM, with 220V voltage. In some more remote areas, electricity may be more limited, so it’s a good idea to bring extra power sources like portable chargers.

  • Is it safe to kayak in Toba and Pulau Banyak?

    Kayaking in Lake Toba

Lake Toba is an inland volcanic lake, meaning there are no strong ocean currents or tides to worry about. The water is generally calm, making it a great place for beginners and experienced kayakers alike. Weather conditions can change, and occasional winds may create small waves, but nothing too extreme. If conditions become unfavorable, your guide will adjust the route or suggest a break.

    Kayaking in Pulau Banyak

Pulau Banyak offers crystal-clear waters and mostly sheltered kayaking routes, making it a fantastic spot for paddling. However, since it’s in the Indian Ocean, some crossings may have stronger currents or occasional swells. The guides always assess the conditions before each trip. If needed, they will take a safer route or offer a boat transfer at certain points during supported kayak trips.

Both destinations offer a safe and enjoyable kayaking experience with the right guidance and preparation!

  • How about edidemic disease in Toba, Pulau Banyak, Ketambe, Sibayak regarding to malaria or other diseases?

Health & Safety: Epidemic Diseases in Toba, Pulau Banyak, Ketambe & Sibayak

Your health and safety are our top priorities! While these destinations are generally safe, here’s what you need to know about potential health risks like malaria and other diseases.

    Malaria & Mosquito-Borne Diseases

    • Toba & Sibayak: The risk of malaria is low due to the cooler climate and higher altitude. However, general mosquito precautions are still recommended.
    • Pulau Banyak: The islands have very low to no malaria risk, but it’s still wise to use mosquito repellent, especially at dawn and dusk.
    • Ketambe Village: Very low risk of malaria since the village is more open and near human activity. Short Jungle Treks: Slight risk, as mosquitoes are more common in humid forested areas. You likely won’t need anti-malarial medication, but preventive measures are still recommended.

    Other Health Considerations

    • Dengue Fever: Found in some lowland areas, including Pulau Banyak and parts of Toba. Protect yourself with mosquito repellent and long sleeves.
    • Leeches: More of an annoyance than a health risk! Long socks and leech repellent help.
    • Water & Food Safety: Stick to bottled or purified water and eat well-cooked food to avoid stomach issues.
    • Vaccinations: Routine vaccines like Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Tetanus are recommended.

How to Stay Safe & Healthy

    • Use insect repellent with DEET or natural alternatives.
    • Wear long-sleeved clothing in jungle areas.
    • Sleep under mosquito nets when necessary.
    • Bring any personal medications you might need.
